Shelter Hub, an initiative within the Wellness Hub Research and Support program, is an initiative led by the Knowledge Translation Program at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, in collaboration with over 20 project partners.
The aim of Shelter Hub is to support key stakeholders in shelters prevent and manage infectious disease outbreaks and optimize physical and mental wellness both during and beyond COVID-19.
As part of the initiative, 10 homeless shelters located in Toronto will be selected to take part in the program. The homes will be purposively selected based on existing relationships, significant COVID-19 risks and documented outbreaks, and an interest in infection prevention and control. The objective of Shelter Hub is to implement a pilot of the IPAC+ bundle in the selected shelters and develop a rapidly scalable checklist-based tool to optimize infection prevention and control measures in shelters across the Greater Toronto Area.
Along with providing shelter specific resources and information, Shelter Hub will use an integrated knowledge translation approach to implement and evaluate the impact of IPAC+ in preventing infections and integrate immunity study results to tailor delivery to shelters to improve COVID-19 preparedness and outbreak management.
